Windows 7 for everyday tasks

Windows 7 in simple is making your PC simplified. It has better ways to find and manage files, help you speed through everyday tasks, and is designed for faster and more reliable performance. We shall explore through some of these features in this article.

HomeGroup:

You can share your music, pictures and documents from your home computers with HomeGroup that is available in Windows 7. Even domain joined computers can be part of your HomeGroup.

Having created a HomeGroup, you can share devices and libraries in your home as well including videos and printers. You can find your HomeGroup in the Explorer`s navigation panel.
Pasting to Match In MS Excel

Do you frequently copy / paste information from documents, emails or the Internet into MS Excel?

If you don't have your paste options set to match the destination formatting (and quite frankly don't want it set that way) then you may be getting tired of all the formatting changes you have to complete to make the pasted information match the formatting of the existing data in the worksheet.
Q:
What's the difference between "run" and "save" when I download a program?

A:
When you are downloading a file off the internet you may get the option to "Run" or "Save". Either of these options will lead you to the setup for the program and install it on your computer, but the difference lies in where the setup file opens from.

image

If you click "Save" you can specify where the setup file goes (Downloads or the desktop). From there you could put it on a disk just in case you need to reinstall it or want to put it on another computer.
Boolean Searching

There's something about learning a funny technological word that brings out the geek in everyone! Today's subject is one that will help everyone work more efficiently while searching on the Internet. It's called “Boolean”.

image

Say you're looking for a specific thing on the web, but every time you search it seems as though there are too many results, and to go through all of them would take hours! Boolean operators can streamline this process; giving you a more refined search. Here are a few to try out:
Search Engine Optimization Design Guidelines

In the harsh world of search engine optimization, if you’re not first, you’re last!!!

In the Search Engine Optimization 101 tip, we looked at the need and importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In this tip, we’ll look at some design guidelines that’ll help search engines find, index, and rank your website efficiently. The goal is to be ranked in the first page results.

Pre-requisite to SEO
Optimizing websites for search engines only makes sense after you’ve designed the site for high usability. This is because website visitors scamper from poor user experiences. Therefore, ensure your website provides a great user experience before you decide to optimize it. Read the Usability 101 and Usability 201 tips for more information on how to make a website usable.

Guideline 1: Create a Site Rich with Information
People visit your website for a service. As part of this service, there is information transfer that occurs. To search for a particular service or information, people type in criteria in a search engine. This criteria are called keywords. The search engine then locates websites that contain the keywords you have specified. Let’s take an example.

Suppose a person is looking for a closet light. She might type keywords, such as Closet Light, Fluorescent Closet Light, or 6” Fluorescent Closet Light. The search results for each of these keywords is different, as shown below.

Closet Light

AMP Font Viewer

The other day, I received an e-mail from a reader, asking if there was a program that would allow for a quick look at all of the fonts on their system, without having to open a big program such as MS Word. I started looking around and I happened upon a great free download that does just that! It's called AMP Font Viewer and it's very simple to install and use. Just install the program, open it and you'll be good to go!

Here's what it looks like:

Above the Table

Have you ever created a table in MS Word at the beginning of a document, only to find that it was a mistake? I mean, since you began the document, you've probably redone the layout and some of the text just has to go above that table.

But, of course, you're learning the hard way that MS Word isn't going to cooperate very easily.

Every time you try to get to the top of the document (that is, above the table), you end up in the first cell or with an entire column highlighted.

No matter what you do, you're stuck in that table!

You can get the text below the table, but there's just no getting above it!

Or is there?

Don't give up on that table just yet. And by all means, don't delete it to start over!

Try this quick little trick to get to the top.

Use the key combination of Ctrl + Home and then (after releasing the keys), hit the Enter key.

Voila!

You've got a line above your table, with no starting over or frustration required!
Disable Minimize and Maximize Animations

I'm a stickler for functionality, and although bells and whistles are nice to look at, if they don't do anything to increase the performance of my computer, I don't want 'em!

For example, Windows 7 has a neat shrinky/growy animation whenever you minimize or maximize a window, but does it really help anything?

Nope.
Tips on bird photography

Spring or autumn?

Birds keep migrating depending upon seasons. If you are looking for birds during the spring diaspora, take out your camera that very season! Catch some real family bonding between birds- birds mating, or adults tending to offsprings. Get some real nest views on tree-tops. They start migrating towards the south as Autumn starts, and another entirely new flock starts back towards your countryside as summer lapses and winter begins.

Be an early bird to catch the bird!

Shoot early in the morning preferably within three hours after sunrise. The rays will still be mellow giving you delicate hues in the photograph. A little while before sunset is another ideal time for your photography. Get the birds in the best of moods during these hours of the day.

Windows 7 Wallpaper Slideshow

A long time ago, we introduced you to John’s Background Switcher right here in the Worldstart Computer Tips Newsletter. As you’ll remember, the program allowed you to set a group of photos to rotate as your desktop background so that you won’t get the same boring wallpaper every time you look at your desktop. Microsoft has now decided to implement the same idea in Windows 7! The best part is, you can get started right now, as there are some ‘wallpaper slideshows' already included in your copy of Windows 7.

To get started, go back to your desktop and right-click your mouse. Hit Personalize and a window will pop up. Scroll down to Aero Themes and choose one of the themes with more than one picture above the theme name – for example, the Landscapes theme in the screenshot below.

The Speedy Contact Lookup

Need to find a contact's information in MS Outlook now, now, now?!?

Or maybe you just don't feel like the effort and time it takes to switch to your contacts, choose someone then open up their information to find what you need

Either way, a time crunch or just looking for an easier way to access the information, I've got what you need to make your day just a tiny bit easier.

We start with our Outlook toolbar. You're looking for the field next to the address book button.

It happens, we have our Windows installation disks, but the product key is nowhere to be found! Usually it's located on a sticker stuck somewhere on our computer case, but what do you do in those other instances? Panic?

Must... Have... Control!

(Picture note: I keep my taskbar at the top of my screen, so that's why the screen shots look like they are coming from the wrong direction.)

Do you use your control panel in Windows XP a lot? Are you the kind of person who is constantly "adjusting" things? Well, if you are, then you and I have a lot in common. Here's a tip that will save us both some time.

Rather than clicking Start>Settings>Control Panel and then hunting for the appropriate icon in the control panel folder, why not put a cascading control panel right on your Start menu? Then, you just click Start, Control Panel, and select the appropriate utility from a menu. Much faster and much neater.

Here's how :

1.
Right-click the Start button and go to Properties .

A Little "Nudge" in MS PowerPoint

We all know that with an object selected (such as a shape, picture, textbox, etc ) you can use the arrow keys in PowerPoint to nudge them around the slide.

Basically, the amount of movement you get depends upon the grid size setting. The larger the grid spacing is set to be the bigger the nudge the arrow keys will give your object.

But what about the times when the arrow key nudges are still too big?

A Quicker Scroll

Sure, Worldstart has tips to assist you in scrolling, but have you ever accidentally pushed down on your mouse's scroll wheel like a button? What happened?

Did you see something like this?

The Morris Virus

Robert Morris, a doctoral student at Cornell University, wrote one of the first computer viruses that spread itself via a network. When released, the virus would target VAX and Sun machines. Unlike some of today’s viruses, it was not designed to cause harm to the computer: when a computer was infected, the virus would duplicate itself every 90 seconds. This caused the computers to eventually slow down or crash as the number of virus processes running in the background increased. During this period, the virus would scan for other computers connected to the network and look for security holes in the OS and networks that it could bypass to infect another machine. It also used the send mail protocol to send infected emails from the host computer.
Print Preview While You're Editing in MS Excel 2007?

Sounds unbelievable - how in the world will we preview the printed version of a worksheet while we edit?

We're all very used to creating our worksheets then going to print preview. The process always seems to hold surprises. It doesn't split from one page to the next in any way we had anticipated the header is so large that it overlaps the worksheet content the list of disappointing surprises could go on for days.
Q:
What does the "End" Key do?

A:
The End key can actually do different things, depending on the program you're using it with. Its main use though is to help you get from the top of a page to the bottom quickly. For example, let's say you're browsing the Internet for some FAQs on a specific topic. You find a great Web site that will help you out, but your question is answered clear at the bottom of the page. Do you sit there and scroll all the way to the bottom? Well, you shouldn't! Instead, use the End key.

Pin the Control Panel to the Taskbar

Do you find yourself accessing the Control Panel often throughout your day? Well, if you're using Windows 7, then you're in luck!

Click Start and then type in “Control Panel” in the search box...

...and drag the control panel icon down to your taskbar.
Using HOSTS to Block Malicious Web Sites

I was looking through our computer tips archive the other day and found an article about computer HOSTS files. The article explains exactly what a HOSTS file is and how it can be used to block malicious Web sites. At the very end of the article, there's a short paragraph about how you can download a custom HOSTS file that will automatically block many of the known malicious Web sites on the Web today.
Align Text Left or Right... But I Want Both!

Ever find yourself in need of both a left and right alignment of text on the same line in MS Word?

What did you do?

I know some pretty determined people and I've seen all kinds of solutions for this. Many included things like a lot of extra spaces and multiple columns and at first, these may seem like a good idea, but they tend to cause problems later on during the editing process.

The Mouseless Right-Click

Over the years I have found that there are many people who would like to use the right-click menus my tips are always referring to but just hate the mouse.

These right-clicks are great for everyone who's comfortable with the mouse. And many people aren't even remotely interested in trying to remember all the key combinations necessary to replace all the stuff the right-click can do.
A:
Have you ever run into a situation where you had to sign in to your computer under the Administrator account? I mean, sometimes certain software programs, etc. require you to have Administrator rights before you can actually install anything on your PC. (You can read this article for more information on Administrator rights, just in case you're not too sure about the whole thing).
Animals in photographs

Zoos are really interesting, and no matter how much National Geographic or Animal Planet we watch, a visit to the zoo is always too precious an experience for us to ever stop going there. With respect to what we’re talking about here, you need to watch out for the following things when taking out your camera in a zoo.

* The distance between the photographer and the animal

* The fact that animals don’t stay in the same place for too long.

* Sporadic lighting in zoos where there are lot of trees. You also have to shoot indoor sometimes.

Restore Previously Opened Folders

Are there folders you open up habitually every time you start up your computer? If so, did you know that you can set up your computer to open those folders automatically each time you boot up? Windows Vista users need only apply for this one!

Here's what you need to do to make it happen:

1.) First, open Windows Explorer or browse to any folder.

2.) Next, select "Organize" from the toolbar at the top of the window.

3.) Click on Folder and Search Options and the following window will open up on your screen:

Really Remove It This Time!

When you work with MS Excel do you use the Ctrl + End feature - you know, the one that takes you to the very last column and row of your data?

Have you ever tried to use this one and found yourself way beyond the data?

I have and when I got there I found myself thinking that I hadn't had data in the part of the worksheet in quite a while so why is Excel taking me way out here?

The answer is as simple as it is illogical to me. Excel takes me way beyond the current data because once upon a time there was data out there and Excel still remembers that fact.
Run As Administrator

You know what I find frustrating? When I'm logged into Windows Vista or 7 as the administrator, but find that I still can't run something because it says that I need “Administrative Privileges”.

What gives? Aren't I the administrator already?

Well, some programs like the Command Prompt, Task Scheduler, and Regedit which haven't been fully updated to work with Vista or 7, need elevated privileges in order to function properly. The good news is that there's a quick and easy way to run these programs as “Administrator”, and I'm going to show you how right now.
If you're like me, you like to work in MS Word using the Print Layout view.

I simply like to be able to see my whole page, margins and all. I also like to keep an eye on the layout of the document without always jumping to Print Preview.

Now, once in awhile, I find myself working on documents that have a lot of empty space at the bottom of several pages. Maybe pages that look something like this:

You occasionally have the need to delete a bunch of files and folders off your computer, right? You know, just to free up some space.

Well, every time you delete a file, Windows asks you this: "Are you sure you want to move this file to the Recycle Bin?" That's typically a good thing, because it prevents you from deleting files by mistake, but if you're trying to do some cleanup and you need to delete a lot of files at once, you might not want to be prompted every single time.

Luckily, there's a simple way to turn it off while you're doing your cleaning. (Otherwise, I recommend you leave it on).

Do you use the Run command quite often to help you find different programs quickly? For example, you may use it to find your computer's calculator or maybe the on screen keyboard. (Those are just a couple examples of what you can use the Run command for).

So, how do you usually get to the Run box? Do you go to Start>Run and then type in your command? Do you hit the Windows key + R and then type in the command? Are you using Windows Vista or 7 and just type "Run" in the search box? Well, how would you like an even easier way to get the Run box to pop up on your screen?
Fences

Hate a cluttered desktop? Try out Fences by Stardock, the makers of the wonderful Windows Blinds desktop skinning app. What Fences does is, it lets you group icons into a box called fences, so you can have various icons grouped together for Work, Mail, movies, music, shortcuts, games, misc etc. When double-clicked on an empty area on the desktop, all the Fences with icons in them disappear, when double-clicked, they reappear again.

Fences is versatile enough to be easily resizable and moveable, as you see fit, and has centralized control. It lets you appreciate the wallpaper sans the clutter.

When we started this blog Shoes of Prey was still well and truly in its early stages. While we were still working out how the business would work we had some extra time on our hands and starting a blog to discuss what we were up to seemed like a really valuable thing to do. Our friends were interested to know what we were up to, so a blog was a great way of keeping them up to date, and we wanted to get people's input on things like the sizing conundrum and brainstorming business names, and the blog worked brilliantly for that (thanks again everyone!).

Our recent post about the value of blogging lead to a discussion in the comments about ways to organise to do lists and I thought I'd share mine.

My Gmail inbox and calendar are where I organise my life. I find that around half of the things I have to do come to me via email, so for the other half, I simply send an email to myself so those things are also captured in my inbox. I use Google Calendar for to dos that are time based, eg. I have to do something at a particular time or on a date in 2 weeks time.
